Powerful technology will threaten all human jobs, could even spark a war, Tesla CEO says

Elon Musk . Mr. Musk warned about the dangers of artificial intelligence and said high price of Tesla shares reflects the optimism of the future of the company.

Elon Musk warned a gathering of U.S. governors that they need to be concerned about the potential dangers from the rise of artificial intelligence and called for the creation of a regulatory body to guide development of the powerful technology.

Speaking Saturday at the National Governors Association meeting in Rhode Island, the chief executive of electric-car maker Tesla Inc. and rocket-maker Space Exploration Technologies Corp. laid out several worst-case scenarios for AI, saying that the technology will threaten all human jobs and that an AI could even spark a war. “It is the biggest risk that we face as a civilization,” he said.

Mr. Musk has been vocal about his concerns about AI and helped create OpenAI, a nonprofit research group that aims for the safe development of the technology. He suggested to the governors that a regulatory agency needs to be formed to begin gaining insight into fast-moving AI development followed by putting regulations into place. Elon Musk: The Man, the Myth, the Risk

Tesla’s boss is a big part of the auto maker’s soaring value, but his jokes are no laughing matter.

Tesla Inc is one of the hottest stocks on the planet, thanks to investor belief in Elon Musk. Paradoxically, that might be the biggest risk investors face.

Take the events at Tuesday’s annual meeting, for instance. In response to a question about what the company CEO and chairman does in his time away from work, Mr. Musk said, in part, “Sometimes go crazy on Twitter. You know, sort of, red wine, vintage record player, some Ambien, magic! Magic happens.” The assembled crowd burst into laughter.

Investors certainly are laughing all the way to the bank at the moment. Tesla’s shares are up by about two-thirds just this year, propelling it to a significantly larger market value than more-established and profitable General Motors or Ford. The Model 3 mass market sedan is due to enter production next month, and the stock’s many short sellers are under significant pressure. Shares once again ripped higher Wednesday morning. Wahnsinn oder nicht? Tesla ist mehr wert als Ford

Posted by hkarner - 4. April 2017

4. April 2017, 16:51 derstandard.at

Elon Musk supercharges progress on energy storage

Australia attempts to stop blackouts using batteries

HOW much power does a tweetstorm involving two tech tycoons, the prime minister of Australia and 8.5m Twitter followers generate? Enough, at least, to supercharge a debate about the future role of batteries in the world’s energy mix.

Elon Musk, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur (pictured), may be best known for his gravity-defying ambition, but his core product is the battery: whether for his Tesla cars, for the home or for grid-scale electricity storage. He gave the last of these an unexpected jolt of publicity on March 10th, by responding to a blackout-inspired challenge on Twitter from an Australian software billionaire, Mike Cannon-Brookes. Mr Musk said he could install 100 megawatt hours (MWh) of battery storage in the state of South Australia in 100 days to help solve an energy crisis it faces, or it would be free of charge. “That serious enough for you?” he asked.

In response, Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister, communicated with Mr Musk and appeared to turn from pro-coal sceptic into battery believer. On March 14th Jay Weatherill, the premier of South Australia, went further. Declaring that the national electricity market was “broken”, he said the state would launch its own A$550m ($415m) plan to build a 100MW battery system, as well as a gas-fired power station, with public funds. Mr Musk may have got what he wanted. He is “good at bringing nerdy subjects to a broad audience”, says Julia Attwood of Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Die Robotersteuer und die Visionen des Herrn Gates

Posted by hkarner - 20. Februar 2017

MUSK’S ‚INTEGRATED FUTURE:‘ SOLAR ROOFS, HOME BATTERY, ELECTRIC CAR

New products aim to show the benefits of combining Tesla with SolarCity.

Tesla Motors Inc. Chief Executive Elon Musk on Friday unveiled new energy products aimed at illustrating the benefits of combining his electric car and battery maker with solar installer SolarCity Corp.

The billionaire entrepreneur showed off solar-powered roof tiles that eliminate the need for traditional panels and a longer-lasting home battery, which Tesla calls the Powerwall, aimed at realizing his vision of selling a fossil fuel free lifestyle to consumers.

„This is sort of the integrated future. An electric car, a Powerwall and a solar roof. The key is it needs to be beautiful, affordable and seamlessly integrated,“ Musk said while showcasing the products on homes that once served as the set of the television show „Desperate Housewives.“ Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

HOW ELON MUSK IS USING TESLA TO KILL BIG OIL

Posted by hkarner - 29. August 2016

Source: NewsWeek

Tesla cars will be a part of a sustainable electric system: the solar panels, the batteries, and the software to manage power and trade it over networks.

Musk CCThis has been the planet’s hottest summer in recorded history, so it’s nice to know Elon Musk has commenced his grand scheme to transform the energy business so profoundly that there’s a chance Iceland won’t become the new Jamaica after all.

One small step in Musk’s plan involves merging Tesla, his electric car company, with SolarCity, his cousin’s solar panel maker. That deal—announced in August—has been getting all sorts of blowback from short-term-thinking Wall Street nincompoops, who groan that both companies are losing money and the merger won’t help. Such doubts about Musk are like asking the Wright brothers in 1899 why they were fiddling with bicycle parts.

Future of Energy

There’s so much more at stake than just a company or stock price. The future of energy is coming into view, driven by Musk and a growing number of investors and entrepreneurs. In a decade or two, most homes and buildings will have cheap and superefficient solar panels on their roofs and high-powered batteries in their basements or garages. The batteries will store power generated when the sun shines for use when it doesn’t. Each of these buildings will be connected to a two-way power line that can allow anyone to sell excess energy or buy needed energy in an eBay-style marketplace. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

With SolarCity Cuts, Elon Musk’s Magic May Be Wearing Thin

Posted by hkarner - 23. August 2016

Source: Technology Review

As demand for its rooftop solar panels slows, SolarCity cuts costs and seeks a fundamentally new strategy.

Residential solar provider SolarCity has announced layoffs and cost-cutting measures, only a few weeks after Tesla Motors announced plans to acquire it. The move is one of several good reasons to be skeptical about whether Elon Musk’s “master plan” to unite the two money-losing companies is, in fact, good business.

In a statement Wednesday, the company said, “We fully expect to grow again in 2017, but we must reduce costs in the short term to be in position to do so.” Combined with Musk’s comments on the company’s discouraging earnings call earlier this month and recent developments in the residential solar market, the moves seem like not just a temporary cost-cutting measure but a worrying sign of deeper trouble.

SolarCity is struggling to find a business model to replace the 20-year leases that fueled the company’s growth but have become increasingly unpopular with both banks and customers. Less than three months ago, it introduced a loan program designed to attract customers who prefer to purchase rather than lease their panels, but that offering has failed to shore up flagging demand for SolarCity’s product. Tesla Shakes Up Market for Lithium, Other Metals

‘In order to produce half a million cars a year…we would basically need to absorb the entire world’s lithium-ion production,’ Elon Musk said in March

Tesla Motors Inc., shaking up the auto industry with its battery-operated cars, is now reshaping metals markets, too.

Tesla and other electric-vehicle makers are swallowing up lithium, a lightweight material that some call “white petroleum” for its use in lithium-ion batteries that power electric cars.

Lithium carbonate prices rose 47% in the first quarter compared with the average price in 2015, according to the most recent available data from data provider Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. In 2015, when most other metals and commodities still were in the doldrums, lithium prices rose 28%, Benchmark Mineral Intelligence said. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

LONDON – Discussions about building a green future tend to focus on the need to improve the generation of energy from renewable sources. But that is just the first step. Better mechanisms for storing and releasing that energy – when the sun isn’t shining, the wind isn’t blowing, or when electric cars are on the move – are also critical. And, contrary to popular belief, it is the public sector that is leading the way toward effective solutions.

Since the commercial development of lithium-ion batteries – the rechargeable batteries common in consumer electronics – in the early 1990s, the challenge of storing and releasing power effectively enough to make sustainable energy sources viable alternatives to fossil fuels has been a vexing one. And efforts by entrepreneurial billionaires like Bill Gates and Elon Musk to overcome this challenge have been the focus of much excited media speculation. So how many billionaires does it take to change a battery?

The answer, it turns out, is zero. This week, Ellen Williams, Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, part of the US Department of Energy, announced that her agency had beaten the billionaires to it. ARPA-E, she declared, had attained “some holy grails in batteries,” which will enable us to “create a totally new approach to battery technology, make it work, make it commercially viable.” Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »
