Brexit is an opportunity to transform both Britain and Europe.

Friday night marks an epochal event in Europe’s history as the United Kingdom leaves the European Union. It has been a long journey to reach this point since the Brexit referendum in June 2016—so long that it’s easy to lose sight of the event’s significance amid the fog of political confusion along the way.

That significance can’t be overstated. The EU was founded on the notion that only an ever‑deeper economic union—with an ever‑closer political union close on its heels—could secure peace and prosperity for a Continent traumatized by the 20th century. Most continental political leaders, if not their voters, still believe this. Those leaders also believe, although few dare say out loud, that both forms of union must compromise nation‑state sovereignty.

British voters think otherwise. Their 2016 vote to leave the EU, ratified in December’s general election, was not a vote for war and poverty. It was a vote for a different and, they believe, better form of peace and prosperity than the EU can offer.

Intelligent cloud unit had sales of $11.87 billion, up 27% from the year‑ago period

Microsoft reported that revenue rose 14% to $36.9 billion.

Microsoft Corp.’s cloud business is continuing to serve as a source of strong profits even as the company spends heavily to expand its offerings and acquire new customers.

The Redmond, Wash., software giant Wednesday posted stronger fiscal second‑quarter earnings on record sales, driven by growth in its cloud‑computing offerings. Gross margins for the commercial cloud business, which includes Azure computing services and Office 365 applications, grew to 67%. And while margins for the business rose for a fourth‑consecutive quarter, executives told analysts on a conference call that percentage should continue to rise this year.

Revenue from the commercial cloud business grew 39% to $12.5 billion, which Chief Executive Satya Nadella said reflected the company’s ability to sell a broader set of cloud products, including cloud infrastructure as well as cloud‑based productivity applications. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Let’s abandon climate targets, and do something completely different

Setting targets for climate action sounds sensible, but is actually impeding progress. There’s a different approach: maximisation

‘The 2015 Infrastructure Act introduced a legal duty to ‘maximise the economic recovery’ of petroleum in the UK.’ An oil rig in the North Sea.

The crisis is not imminent. The crisis is here. The recent infernos in Australia; the storms and floods in Brazil, Madagascar, Spain and the US; and the economic collapse in Somalia, caused in part by a devastating cycle of droughts and floods, are not, or not only, a vision of the future. They are signs of a current and escalating catastrophe.

This is why several governments and parliaments, the UK’s among them, have declared a climate emergency. But no one in government acts as if it is real. They operate within the old world of incremental planning for a disaster that has yet to arrive. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »
