Going digital has remade the American economy and the world of work. “And yet, for all of the evidence that big changes are underway, surprisingly little data exists to track the spread of digital adoption,” the Brookings Institution said in its Digitalization and the American Workforce report.

The Brookings report quantified the spread of digitalization by analyzing the changes in 545 occupations between 2002 and 2016 based on O*NET, or the Occupational Information Network, the most comprehensive database on U.S. occupations sponsored by the Labor Department. O*NET includes highly detailed, task-level information on hundreds of occupations. The 545 occupations Brookings studied accounted for 90% of the U.S. workforce. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

In the Race to Dominate 5G, China Has an Edge

The super-fast wireless technology is expected to revolutionize everything from driving to surgery

On either side of the brown river running through this misty mountain village, residents live in wooden huts without window panes. Chickens and cats mingle on the road.

But this southwestern Chinese backwater has seen a glimpse of the future that even major U.S. cities such as Boston and Philadelphia still haven’t experienced. As part of a publicity stunt two years ago, a government-owned wireless carrier briefly flipped on a superfast 5G cellular network to broadcast a song-and-dance performance from members of the Dong ethnic minority.

This is the audacity of Beijing’s plan to roll out the next-generation wireless technology, which government leaders around the world say could spark the next industrial revolution.

Note: Cellular site defined as macro base station; investment figures also include 4G and earlier technology. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Big Data Doesn’t Interpret Itself

The history of astronomy shows that observations can only explain so much without the interpretive frame of theories and models

Big data and machine learning are powering new approaches to many scientific questions. But the history of astronomy offers an interesting perspective on how data informs science—and perhaps a cautionary tale.

Early Babylonian astronomers took what today we’d call a pure “big data” or “pattern recognition” approach. They accumulated observations of solar, lunar and planetary motion and eclipses for many centuries and identified various cycles that had repeated many times. Simply by assuming that those cycles would continue, they were able to give good advice for planting, irrigation and harvest times, to cast credible horoscopes and to predict in advance when lunar eclipses would occur. The Trade Uncertainty Principle

New evidence that tariff shocks have put economic gains at risk.

President Trump tweeted Friday that “The Economy is great. The only thing adding to ‘uncertainty’ is the Fake News!” Sorry, sir. The economy is fair to good, but it’s no longer as great as it was last year, and a major reason is the uncertainty caused by Mr. Trump’s trade policy.

The President is right that many in the media are cheerleading bad economic news for political reasons. They want him to lose. Certainly it’s amusing to see liberal economists who denied any damage from the uncertainty of Barack Obama ’s hyper-regulation now fret about the uncertainty from trade policy.

But these columns have been consistent in pointing out the harm from both, and our goal has been to prevent economic damage and maintain the faster GDP and wage growth in 2017 and 2018 that were sparked by Mr. Trump’s tax reform and deregulation policies. Our goal is to prevent a recession, not to talk the country into one, and it does no one any good to ignore reality. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »
