Pyramids of Crisis

November 30, 2018

In fact, we have been doing something about it for many thousands of years. An inverted pyramid of geniuses and giants, modern medicine, nutrition, sanitation, and assorted other innovations has extended our lifespans and helped more of us live to ripe old ages. That’s wonderful… but it’s also a problem many of us still don’t fully understand.

I have mixed feelings myself. At 69, I truly believe I’ll live well past 100 and stay as healthy and independent as I am now. But sometimes I wonder. For instance, in the past few weeks I had a growing adverse reaction to a new (to me) medicine. It made me tired and slowly lowered my blood pressure to a dangerous level. I didn’t recognize it and just thought the years and miles were finally beginning to take their toll. Finally, in consultation with my doctor, we figured out what was going wrong, changed course and the major symptoms improved quickly. But for about a month, I felt much older, almost invalid at times. It was kind of like the Hemingway line, “How do you go bankrupt?” The answer: “Slowly, and then all at once.” Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

China Deserves its Economic Success

Posted by hkarner - 3. Dezember 2018

In 1995, the late economist Gustav Ranis wrote that, “If there is one key to developmental success, it is avoiding the encrustation of ideas,” which is achieved through policymakers‘ “ever-increasing reliance on the responsiveness of large numbers of dispersed decision-makers.” That description suits China perfectly.

SHANGHAI – In the 1940s, the British historian Arnold J. Toynbee predicted that the United States and the Soviet Union would remain the world’s only two great powers. Not even China and India – with their “ancient civilizations” and “vast populations, territories, and resources” – would be able to “exert their latent strength” in the ensuing decades.

Toynbee was right about the ensuing decades, but wrong about two places: the Soviet Union collapsed, and now China has become the world’s second-largest economy and a leading global player.  But, at a time of powerful economic headwinds and a new cold war with the US, will China continue its rise, or go the way of the Soviet Union?

To answer that question, it is first worth noting that China is not an enemy of the US, and the new Sino-American cold war is not rooted in a military standoff, much less ideological conflict. Rather, it reflects US President Donald Trump’s rejection of China’s economic rise and, more generally, of open policies. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Apple leads the pack, followed by fellow tech giants Amazon and Microsoft, in the Drucker Institute’s second annual Management Top 250 ranking

A trash hauler, a liquor giant, a maker of hip replacements and the company that brought us the iPhone all share one distinction: They are among the most effectively run U.S. companies today.

Those are some of the revelations of this year’s Management Top 250, a landmark ranking that uses the principles of the late management guru Peter Drucker to identify the most effectively managed companies.

Topping this year’s list is Apple Inc., the world’s most valuable publicly traded company. The iPhone maker climbed to the No. 1 spot in the 2018 ranking, dethroning Amazon.com Inc., by performing consistently well across each of the five main components of the overall ranking. Amazon places second this year, followed by Microsoft Corp. and chip makers Nvidia Corp. and Intel Corp. Other management highfliers include Google parent Alphabet Inc., consulting firm Accenture PLC and Johnson & Johnson , Nos. 6, 7 and 8, respectively. Rounding out the top 10 are Procter & Gamble Co. and International Business Machines Corp. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »
