What Italy’s Election Means for the EU

Posted by hkarner - 23. März 2018

Lucrezia Reichlin, a former director of research at the European Central Bank, is Professor of Economics at the London Business School.

The EU – and the eurozone, in particular – are now facing a serious political challenge, exemplified by the outcome of Italy’s recent election. Are European institutions strong enough to confront that challenge, or must EU leaders rethink – and potentially recast – the pillars of cooperation?

ROME – Italy’s recent election – in which voters rebuffed traditional parties in favor of anti-establishment and far-right movements, producing a hung parliament – should serve as a wake-up call for Europe. The decades-old project of building European unity may not just be far less robust than assumed; without a significant rethink, it may not even be viable.

The financial crisis of 2008 and the debt crisis that followed revealed major flaws in the governance of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Member states responded by building new institutions, such as the Single Supervisory Mechanism and the European Stability Mechanism. These efforts are, however, almost certainly inadequate to make the EMU resilient enough to withstand future financial crises. Anyone who believes in the European project should hope that further reforms follow soon. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

China’s President Xi Jinping designates some sidekicks

Subject: The helmsman’s crew

The new vice-president is a firefighter; the new deputy prime minister a brainbox

IT SEEMS almost quaint to focus on the officials elevated to leadership positions under Xi Jinping, China’s president. Mr Xi, after all, is now being called the Communist Party’s core, helmsman of the country and the people’s leader—all titles associated with Mao Zedong. Mr Xi’s thought has been written into the constitution, to which all members of the party must pledge allegiance. State media report on him in ever more fawning terms and pay less and less attention to everyone else.

Television news showed delegates to the annual session of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s ersatz legislature, weeping for joy when Mr Xi’s re-election as president was announced. His unusually bellicose speech to the NPC, on March 20th, in which he warned the world that “not one inch of the motherland’s territory can be carved off”, was rapturously received. Yet even a one-man show needs its stage hands. Mr Xi has assembled a new team, anchored by two officials who will go a long way to determining the success of his rule. One is known for his intellect, the other for his ruthlessness. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

President Donald Trump expected to unveil levies Thursday

WASHINGTON—The Trump administration’s anti-China tariffs could hit $50 billion of Chinese imports, said an individual with knowledge of the plans.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to make an announcement at 12:30 p.m. on tariffs and investment restrictions aimed at China designed to get Beijing to halt practices the U.S.believes violate U.S. intellectual property rights.

The U.S. is also expected to announce it would sue China at the World Trade Organization for trade law violations. The tariffs would be assessed separtely without going to the WTO. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

What Putin Won in Russia’s Election

Posted by hkarner - 23. März 2018

Nina L. Khrushcheva, the author of Imagining Nabokov: Russia Between Art and Politics and The Lost Khrushchev: A Journey into the Gulag of the Russian Mind, is Professor of International Affairs at The New School and a senior fellow at the World Policy Institute.

Over the course of his 18 years in power, Russian President Vladimir Putin has veered from embracing the West to vilifying it. His reelection – with record-high turnout and support – suggests that his bet on nationalism has paid off handsomely, and that Russia is headed for a long period of stagnation.

MOSCOW – At the beginning of his presidency in the early 2000s, Vladimir Putin was a pro-Western island in a sea of anti-Western Russian elites. As I observed at the time, his desire to “anchor Russia firmly to the West” stood in stark contrast to the country’s traditional notions of security. But after Sunday’s presidential election, in which Putin cemented his vision of Russia as a military bastion, it is clear that now his island is nationalism, and will remain so for as long as he rules the Kremlin.

The danger this poses is all too clear. After 18 years in power, Putin now goes even further than his Soviet predecessors in casually raising the prospect of a nuclear conflict with the West. This aggressive rhetoric seems to have served him well in the election, the result of which has essentially granted him carte blanche for his fourth term. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

What Zuckerberg should do

Facebook faces a reputational meltdown
This is how it, and the wider industry, should respond

LAST year the idea took hold that Mark Zuckerberg might run for president in 2020 and seek to lead the world’s most powerful country. Today, Facebook’s founder is fighting to show that he is capable of leading the world’s eighth-biggest listed company or that any of its 2.1bn users should trust it.

News that Cambridge Analytica (CA), a firm linked to President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign, got data on 50m Facebook users in dubious, possibly illegal, ways has lit a firestorm. Mr Zuckerberg took five days to reply and, when he did, he conceded that Facebook had let its users down in the past but seemed not to have grasped that its business faces a wider crisis of confidence. After months of talk about propaganda and fake news, politicians in Europe and, increasingly, America see Facebook as out of control and in denial. Congress wants him to testify. Expect a roasting.

Since the news, spooked investors have wiped 9% off Facebook’s shares. Consumers are belatedly waking up to the dangers of handing over data to tech giants that are run like black boxes. Already, according to the Pew Research Centre, a think-tank, a majority of Americans say they distrust social-media firms. Mr Zuckerberg and his industry need to change, fast.
