«The Fundamental Problems of the Financial Crisis Are Still with Us»

Raghuram Rajan: «The US housing boom was an attempt to ward off the changes caused by technological progress, global trade and the disappearance of many middle-class jobs.»

Raghuram Rajan, Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago and former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, warns of more turmoil ahead if the developed world fails to adapt to the fundamental forces of global change. It is a pivotal moment on the eve of the financial crisis. In the late summer of 2005, the world’s most influential central bankers and economists gather in Jackson Hole at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. The atmosphere is carefree. Financial markets have nicely recovered from the bust of the dotcom bubble and the global economy is humming. Under the topic »Lessons for the Future» the presentations celebrate the era of Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, who has announced to resign in a few months. Since 1987 at the helm of the world’s most powerful central bank, he presided over a period of continuous growth and was one of the leading forces of deregulation in the financial sector. Silicon Valley’s sexism problem

Venture capitalists are bright, clannish and almost exclusively male

“BOOBER” is the nickname Travis Kalanick, the boss of Uber, used to describe the effect that the ride-hailing startup had on his attractiveness to the opposite sex. Mr Kalanick’s wisecrack seems to have been emblematic of a deeply macho culture. An investigation is under way into allegations from a former employee that Uber refuses to promote capable women or to take complaints about harassment seriously. The results are due to be released in the coming weeks.

Uber is not the only technology star in the spotlight for its treatment of women. Google has been accused by America’s Department of Labour of paying female employees significantly less than male ones. Google flatly denies the charge. But that technology in general, and Silicon Valley in particular, has a gender problem is not in doubt. A survey of 210 women in the valley found that 60% had experienced unwanted sexual advances and that two-thirds felt excluded from important social and networking opportunities. PayScale, a research firm, has found that only 21% of American tech executives are female (the figure in other industries is 36%). Women in tech are paid less than men, even after controlling for experience, education and responsibilities. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Subject: Tesla Value ‘Inexplicable,’ Says AutoNation CEO

Mike Jackson’s remarks come after electric-vehicle maker briefly overtook GM as largest U.S. auto maker

The head of the U.S.’s largest car-dealership chain called Tesla Inc.’s TSLA -1.18% market value “inexplicable,” a day after investors pushed the Silicon Valley auto maker ahead of General Motors Co.

Tesla “is either one of the great Ponzi schemes of all time” or will eventually work out for investors, said AutoNation Inc. Chief Executive Mike Jackson during an interview at a New York automotive event held by J.D. Power and the National Automobile Dealers Association on Tuesday.

Mr. Jackson, among the auto industry’s more outspoken executives, called Tesla overvalued and GM undervalued at roughly $33 a share, arguing the former will continue to struggle to make money selling electric vehicles despite a loyal following. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Democracy Is Not Dying

Seeing Through the Doom and Gloom

In the West, it is difficult to escape the pessimism that pervades current discussions of global affairs. From Russia’s invasion of Crimea and the never-ending crises of the European Union, to the Syrian catastrophe and the rise of the Islamic State (also known as ISIS), the world appears to be tearing at the seams.

Meanwhile, democracy itself appears to be unraveling—helped along by resurgent authoritarianism, weakened liberal democratic values, rising populism, and contagious illiberalism.

Democracy has unquestionably lost its global momentum. According to Freedom House, there are only a handful more electoral democracies in the world today than there were at the start of this century. Dozens of newer democracies in the developing world are struggling to put down roots, and many older democracies—including, of course, the United States—are troubled. The theory that democratic transitions naturally move in a positive direction and that established democracies don’t tumble backward no longer holds water. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

And what if Trump had not changed his mind?

Posted by hkarner - 13. April 2017

Dank an H.F.!

2017 04 11  by Thierry Meyssan

The chancelleries and the Press are claiming that President Trump changed his policy and betrayed his electors by accepting the resignation of General Flynn, and then by bombing Chayrat. Thierry Meyssan, however, points out several incoherencies which seem to indicate just the opposite – the US military aggression against Syria may in fact be directed, in the long term, against Washington’s allies.

Voltaire Network | Damascus (Syria) | 11 April 2017

Did Donald Trump, who was elected for his programme promising the end of imperialism, and for service of the interests of his people, suddenly change his mind only three months after his arrival at the White House?
This is the ultra-majority interpretation of the bombing of the base at Chayrat on 6 April 2017. All of the allies of the United States approved the action in the name of humanitarian principles. Every one of the allies of Syria condemned it in the name of International Law. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »
