Commission presents White Paper on the future of Europe: Avenues for unity for the EU at 27

EU Commission

I vote for scenario 3! (hfk)

Brussels, 1 March 2017, Press Release

As announced in President Juncker’s 2016 State of the Union speech, the European Commission today presented a White Paper on the Future of Europe, which forms the Commission’s contribution to the Rome Summit of 25 March 2017.

As we prepare to mark the 60th anniversary of the EU, we look back on a peace spanning seven decades and on an enlarged Union of 500 million citizens living in freedom in one of the world’s most prosperous economies. At the same time, the EU has to look forward at how it will carve a vision for its own future at 27. The White Paper sets out the main challenges and opportunities for Europe in the coming decade. It presents five scenarios for how the Union could evolve by 2025 depending on how it chooses to respond.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said: „60 years ago, Europe’s founding fathers chose to unite the continent with the force of the law rather than with armed forces. We can be proud of what we have achieved since then. Our darkest day in 2017 will still be far brighter than any spent by our forefathers on the battlefield. As we mark the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, it is time for a united Europe of 27 to shape a vision for its future. It’s time for leadership, unity and common resolve. The Commission’s White Paper presents a series of different paths this united EU at 27 could choose to follow. It is the start of the process, not the end, and I hope that now an honest and wide-ranging debate will take place. The form will then follow the function. We have Europe’s future in our own hands.“ Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Subject: Once Scorned, ‘Multispeed Europe’ Is Back

Juncker,CCEven lifelong federalists like European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker are backing off from the concept of a lockstep march to ever-closer union

As the U.K. prepares to launch divorce talks with the European Union this month, the rest of the bloc is thinking seriously about loosening the ties among the 27 countries that remain.

In a report Wednesday, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for the first time floated the possibility of the bloc handing back some powers to national governments. These could range from Brussels standing down from policing of government financing of companies, for example, to a broader pullback that would essentially strip the EU back to being merely a single market. Alliance of banks, tech giants a sign that race to build out technology is heating up again

A new consortium of banks and tech giants was set to announce its formation Tuesday, the latest stab at expanding open-ledger “blockchain” technology that could shave billions off the cost of basic Wall Street functions.

The latest project, which was to be unveiled in Brooklyn, is called the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance. The nonprofit foundation, which includes J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., Microsoft Corp., Bank of New York Mellon Corp., Intel Corp. and Banco Santander SA, shows the fight is continuing to develop the killer back-office app in finance, despite increased focus since last year’s election on revenue growth.

So far, there has been more hype than tangible progress on blockchain at banks. The group announcing itself this week is building a platform based on an open-source software project J.P. Morgan started last year called Quorum, which aims to eliminate the need for a costly infrastructure of middlemen and third parties overseeing transactions. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

Milestone comes after Donald Trump strikes an optimistic tone in a speech to Congress, although he offers few new details on his agenda

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged above 21000 for the first time, as investors embraced optimism from President Donald Trump and Federal Reserve officials.

The blue-chip index was up about 230 points shortly after the opening bell, rising 1.1% to 21041. The S&P 500 rose 1% and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.9%, following gains in Asia and Europe.

Stocks have been soaring since Election Day, with the Dow industrials surpassing 19000, 20000 and now 21000.

Ballooning Pension Deficits May Take Air Out of Corporate Germany’s Future
If the level holds through the closing bell, it will tie the fastest thousand-point jump in history: It took 24 sessions from the first close above 10000 for the index to climb to 11000 in 1999. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »
