Is China Building a Road to Ruin?

SHANGHAI—Even the harshest critics of authoritarian rule generally concede that when it comes to building infrastructure China wins hands down over the rich democracies.

America has practically given up. Every four years, The American Society of Civil Engineers reviews the condition of the country’s crumbling schools, chronically congested major airports, potholed roads and decrepit transit systems and offers an overall grade. Its latest, in 2013: D+.

Meanwhile, China can’t build fast enough. Having recently finished the sixth ring road around Beijing, construction crews are now working on a seventh—100 miles out in some places—part of plans to merge the capital with surrounding municipalities to create a “supercity” of 130 million people, slightly larger than the population of Japan. Is an Editable Blockchain the Future of Finance?

Designed to make the technology more attractive to large banks, the change doesn’t seem to be welcomed by purists—but they may have to tolerate it.

Blockchain, the technology that underlies the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, has been celebrated as a way to change the way transactions of all kinds are made. But a suggestion to make an editable version of the technology is now dividing opinion.

The consultancy firm Accenture is patenting a system that would allow an administrator to make changes to information stored in a blockchain. In an interview with the Financial Times (paywall), Accenture’s global head of financial services, Richard Lumb, said that the development was about “adapting the blockchain to the corporate world” in order to “make it pragmatic and useful for the financial services sector.” Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »

MICROSOFT WILL ‚SOLVE CANCER PROBLEM WITHIN A DECADE

Leading computer science company Microsoft will “solve” cancer within a decade by working out how to reprogram diseased cells back to their healthy state, according to reports.

This summer, the technology company opened its first wet laboratory, assembling a team of biologists, programers and engineers who plan to attack cancerous cells the way one attacks a bug in a computer.

Chris Bishop, laboratory director at Microsoft Research, told The Daily Telegraph: “I think it’s a very natural thing for Microsoft to be looking at because we have tremendous expertise in computer science and what is going on in cancer is a computational problem. Den Rest des Beitrags lesen »
